Personal 365 Project - Week 11
I am challenging myself to document the authentic, in-between moments for my family. This is what our 2017 looks like . . .
Today when I told you that you were handsome, as I often do, you asked me if I really meant it. You told me that you don’t like the way you look because according to you, your freckles make you look crazy. Oh my son, I can’t imagine a more perfect boy, and my heart breaks to think that you have had these painful thoughts. We talked about how every person’s body is unique and special and how it feels to notice our differences. You enjoyed the long, quiet discussion with me and seemed to feel reassured. I asked you if I could take a picture of you to show you how handsome you were and you agreed. When I showed you this image you smiled and said, “You were right. I guess I look handsome.”
We went on a bike ride after school and stopped to explore the stream. You found lots of footprints in the mud belonging to deer, dogs, geese, and ducks and tried to track a few of them but their trails got lost in the grass. You could have spent hours here and were disappointed to head home for dinner and bedtime.
A game of chicken with your Lego train.
Henry, today I asked you what you did at recess – who you played with. You told me you didn’t have much fun because none of the friends you wanted to play with were there today. I asked you to tell me who you like to play with and the first person you said was Anna. You don’t see each other much during the day, so you make up for it when you get home.
Today was a rough day. Randy is out of town and I broke my foot while in downtown Kaiserslautern. Luckily we were able to coordinate with some of the people he works with to pick up Henry and Anna from school and keep them until I got out of the ER. I am so thankful to have a little community here to help us when things get tough.
It took me several months to get around to ordering our annual family photo album. It finally came in this week and you have been poring over it at every opportunity. We have strict rules with these books – just like the piano – no food or drinks, hands must be freshly washed – you happily comply and let them consume you for hours at a time.
You two wanted to do a puzzle together and decided on this one because it’s easy. I suppose it’s time we get some new puzzles.
